Uniformity Definition

Since the group decided to focus this project more on uniformity, I decided to do some research into the dictionary definition. I found it interesting how the same word can come up with different definitions in different dictionaries.

uniform
adjective
the same; not changing or different in any way:
As in so many offices that you see, the walls and furniture are a uniform grey.
Small businesses are demanding that they receive uniform treatment from the banks.

[LME]
This is from Latin uniformis ‘of one form’. Uniform [M16th] had the same meaning, until the modern sense of clothing of a fixed style worn by each member of a group developed in the mid 18th century.

  1. Its interesting to see this and relate it to the ideas of textiles as I think of textiles being something that is very unique and individual specially crafted by people and having their own touch and personality within them. However I suppose that in certain circumstances there are restraints on this uniqueness such as when a specific brief is set or a site specific piece has been asked for. Although don't you think that within these there's still a certain sense of being able to put your own twist on things.
